Wakatsuki Houston tells most of her memoir through the perspective of a child because she was only seven-years-old when she was in the camp. Similarly, providing students with materials on Executive Order 9066, the loyalty oath, related Supreme Court cases, and the December riot at Manzanar will allow students to better understand references in the autobiography. This will help students grasp how the US government attempted to justify the imprisonment of American citizens of Japanese descent.
